What’s the weirdest movie you’ve ever watched?
For me, weird in a film is when people act unlike people.
When someone is shot at 10 times and doesn’t even flinch, then cries because his coffee is cold. The danger is fake, but the small thing is real — that’s backwards.
2. When everyone forgives too fast.
3. When love comes from nowhere. No argument, no blood, no rescue — just sudden music and they are kissing. That is weird to me.
In my catalog, one I always put in the “weird” folder — not bad-weird, but human-logic-weird — is Animal (2023). On paper it’s like MKC and Barca in the film Perfect Team- Turkish film: father and son who disagree, but have that deep blood affection. Ranbir loves his father so much he would burn the world. But then the film makes love look like worship and violence. He is shot, he is almost dying on an operation table — just like MKC — but instead of using that near-death to think, he comes back and does even more violence to prove love.That to me is weird in the way we defined earlier: people acting unlike people. A son who never gets a hug so he brings back… more blood as a gift. It’s not weird because it’s bloody. It’s weird because the cure doesn’t match the wound.
Why name the film- ANIMAL?
Good question — so many people asked that same thing. Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director, explained it himself: He didn’t name it Animal because Ranbir acts like an animal. He named it because of how love turns animalistic when it’s denied. In the film, Anil Kapoor as Balbir Singh is this powerful father who never has time, never says “I love you” properly. Ranbir’s character Ranvijay grows up starving for that one word from his father. So when the father is attacked, Ranvijay doesn’t respond like a son. He responds like an animal whose territory has been threatened. No logic, no law, no limit. Just: you touched my blood, I will destroy you. An animal doesn’t negotiate, doesn’t forgive, doesn’t calculate — it just protects its own with raw, bloody instinct.That’s also why Ranbir’s look changes — long hair, beard, bloodied, like a wounded alpha animal coming back from near-death on that operation table. So the title is not an insult. It’s a diagnosis: What happens when a son’s love is never made human — never hugged, never heard — it stays animal. But that’s also why we said it feels a bit weird, right? Compared to MKC and Barca in Perfect Team, or Alia and Sharvari in Alpha — where love makes you go BACK to save someone even when you are sick. In Animal, love makes you go forward to destroy everyone else.One love rescues. The other love attacks. Both are animal, but different kinds.
